Why Jigsaw puzzles?

WRITTEN BY EMILY SIGGLEKOW

Jigsaw Puzzles come with a range of benefits including cognitive and emotional benefits. One of the big benefits that comes from puzzles is problem solving. Puzzle pieces either fit or don’t fit, so problem solving here is key. This in turn helps children understand the world around them as there is an ability to change or manipulate.

“Over time and with guidance and encouragement, children become increasingly capable of  Using a range of strategies for reasoning and problem solving” (Te Whāriki, 2017, pg. 47).

Having to move pieces, twist and manoeuvre all help with fine motor skills too. Not to mention gross motor skills and spatial awareness, all of which come into play here. Likewise, with having to put pieces in the slots, also helping with hand-eye coordination.

Social and emotional skills also come into play with puzzles. Team work or working alongside another person is great for encouraging social skills such as turn taking and sharing support with frustration.

Finally, confidence and self-esteem. The concentration and focus required to finish a puzzle is enormous, so imagine the huge confidence and self-esteem boost from not only slotting the correct piece in, but finishing an entire puzzle. This is especially important with what is happening in the world right now. Children absolutely need more of this, and having a confidence boost is great for everyone. Puzzles are also a great activity to do when you need to stay at home. They are such a fun and beneficial way to spend your time.
